You see, even though our economy is growing again, many companies are still worried about hiring. Some are still trying to get out of the red brought on by this past year. Others have figured out how to squeeze more productivity out of the workers they have instead of hiring new ones.
--President Obama, Allentown, PA, December 4, 2009
The Demagogue-in-Chief is at it again. President Obama's image of a greedy business owner "squeezing" the last ounce of productivity out of his helpless workers would be laughable if its implications weren't so sinister. In this speech the president demonstrates not just his woeful ignorance about how business works but also his fundamental hostility to anyone who tries to make a profit in this country--except, of course, when it comes to the proceeds he himself reaps from the sale of those troves of wisdom, his books. Those profits are okay.
Let's take this absurd statement to its logical conclusion: The patriotic business owner should have lots of minimally productive employees hanging around doing as little as possible to increase the job rolls. Now let's see . . . how long would a business stay in business by applying that model? But this president isn't worried about whether what he's talking would actually work. He's more concerned with creating class warfare and diverting attention from his absurd bailouts and stimulus packages.
Should we be surprised that a president who conducts a "Jobs Summit" is at a loss to understand how business operates? Should we be puzzled that a president who has never had to meet a payroll hasn't a clue about the decisions business owners have to make day in and day out? And should we be shocked to learn that a president who has done so much to create the uncertainty that makes businesses hunker down and freeze hiring is trying to divide a struggling country along the lines of jobs and class? No--all of this was predictable.
As a small business owner, I can tell you that talk about taxing health care benefits, overhauling the health care system to the tune of a trillion dollars, implementing Cap and Trade, and in general sinking the country under a mountain of debt does nothing to spur hiring. The entire feckless crowd in Washington--led by Pelosi, Reid, and of course the president--does nothing to encourage, and much to discourage investment in human resources. So here's a message to the president: Stop blaming the small business owners who are the victims of your absurd policies and do something real to inspire us. Cut payroll and capital gains taxes, drop talk of health care overhaul, jettison Cap and Trade, and end the bailouts and the failed stimulus packages. And most of all, get out of our way. You're nothing but an obstacle to success.
